UC Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team made it five wins in a row with an impressive 7-0 sweep over the U. of Alabama Birmingham this afternoon on the Rob Gym tennis courts. The match was way more competitive than the final score indicates.
The Gauchos once again earned the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively. Michelle Murphy and Sofia Novak were first off with an 8-3 win. Bryanna Ojeda and Asagi Onaga followed with an 8-2 victory at No. 3.
The Gauchos were pressed a bit in singles but prevailed in all six matches. Natalia Lozano was a 6-1,6-0 winner at No. 4 and Asagi Onaga followed that with a 6-1,6-2 win at No. 5. Bryanna Ojeda closed the door winning 6-2,6-3 at No. 6.
Staked to a 4-0 lead the Gauchos top three singles players all pulled out victories. Michelle Murphy grinded out a tough first set tie breaker and held on to win in straight sets. Sofia Novak closed her match out by winning the second set in a tie break and Jill Damion rallied from a set down to win in three and complete the sweep for the Gauchos. Complete results listed below
The UCSB women will compete against last year's Big West champion Long Beach State on Thursday. Long Beach State has a national ranking of #44 and are coming off 5-2 wins over #75 Cal Poly and #27 UC Irvine. They have not lost a conference match in three years.
The Gauchos are 9-3 overall (7-0 versus non conference opponents) and 2-3 in the Big West.
