March 5, 2006

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior Leslie Damion's improbable comeback at No. 5 singles Sunday clinched a hard-fought 4-3 victory for the UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team over Cal State Northridge at the UCSB Tennis Stadium.

With the win, the Gauchos improved to 9-5 overall in dual meet action and 3-1 in Big West Conference play, while the Matadors dropped to 4-5 overall, 1-4 in league action

With the contest knotted at three wins apiece, it all came down to Damion's battle with CSUN senior YuYu Myinttun on court five. Trailing 1-5 in the third set, Damion rallied to triumph 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 and secure the win for the home team. Minutes earlier, Santa Barbara had an opportunity to close out the match at No. 4 singles, however Northridge's Ana Matijasavic pulled out a 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 nail-biter over Gaucho sophomore Charlotte Scatliffe.

Four of the six singles matches were three-set affairs, with UCSB's Chelsea Glynn prevailing 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 and Silvia Gutierrez doing the same for the Matadors by a 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 score at the top spot. Santa Barbara's straight-set winner was Andrea Pintar on court three (6-1, 6-3), while Olga Yepremian notched a 6-4, 6-2 win for the visitors at No. 6.

Doubles action was also hotly-contested, with the Gauchos winning 8-2 on court No. 2 and CSUN earning an 8-3 victory at No. 3 before all eyes focused on the battle at the top spot. There, Pintar and Scatliffe teamed for a narrow 8-6 win over Gutierrez and Myinttun.

UCSB continues its season-long seven-match homestand on Thursday, March 9, hosting East Tennessee State at 1:30 p.m.
