March 4, 2008
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team captured the doubles point against visiting Georgia State this afternoon, but could not overcome the Panthers in singles play losing a tightly contested match, 4-3. With the loss the Gauchos drop their overall record to 4-5 on the season. The match was the Gauchos fourth in a five-day span.
"We're getting used to these types of battles, which is good," said head coach Pete Kirkwood. "I put the team through a lot with four matches in five days, and coming back from the road trip we knew it was going to be a tough match."
In doubles play, sophomores Jill Damion and Asagi Onaga dispatched the Panther duo of Dariana Kozmina and Kiara Powell, 8-4, to give UC Santa Barbara the early lead. UC Santa Barbara secured the doubles point, when sophomore Bryanna Ojeda and senior Juliette Mutzke defeated the pair of Mateja Podgorsek and Kiara Powell, 8-6, at the No. 3 doubles slot.
Georgia State was victorious in the first two singles matches, quickly winning at No. 2 and No. 3. The Gauchos stormed back winning two of the next three matches. Senior Brittany Kausen defeated Kiera Strickland 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6. Bryanna Ojeda assumed the No. 5 singles position for the resting Tova Hausman, and dropped her match to Kiara Powell 6-3, 7-5. At the No. 4 singles spot, Asagi Onaga evened the match at 3-3, by disposing of Panther Katerina Gresova 6-4, 6-4. In a back and forth three hour singles match, Dariana Kozmina outlasted senior Marta Simic 5-7, 6-1, 9-6 to give the visiting Panthers the 4-3 victory.
"We're not disappointed about this at all," said head coach Pete Kirkwood. "The fact that we could be this competitive in a match like this after playing three tough matches in Arizona, you can't complain."
UCSB returns to conference play this Saturday, as they battle the University of Pacific. First serve at the Rob Gym Tennis Courts is set for 11:00 a.m. (PT).
