UC Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team posted an emphatic 5-2 Big West victory over Cal State Northridge Sunday afternoon at the Matador Tennis center. The Gauchos rallied in the doubles point and took four of the six singles matches to improve their overall record to 7-3 (2-3 in Big West).
The match was tight from the start as the Gauchos overcame an 8-4 loss at the No. 1 doubles, to grab victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots.
Cal State Northridge evened the match at one apiece with a straight set win at the No. 1 position. The Matadors were gaining momentum as the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 slots all captured the first set, but the Gauchos extinguished the flames just in time. UCSB was once again led by Sofia Novak, who won in straight sets at No. 3 over Sandra Kukla, 6-1, 6-2. Novak is 9-1 in singles this season. Asagi Onaga widened the lead to 3-1 after securing a 6-1, 6-3 win over Whitney Paluch on court five.
In true Gaucho form, Natalia Lozano stormed back from a tough first set loss to win 6-2, 6-0. Jill Damion also came from behind, saving three match points in the second set to cruise past Nina Jaworwski, 1-6, 7-6, 6-1.
Next up for the Gauchos is the University of San Francisco. The match will be at the Rob Gym tennis courts Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
