FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - UC Santa Barbara senior Marta Simic won her match at No. 1 singles, and teamed with Charlotte Scatliffe to win at No. 1 doubles, as the Gauchos improved to 4-2 win a 4-3 win at Northern Arizona on Friday.
In a match that lasted six hours, UCSB parlayed the doubles point and three singles matches into the victory. Simic and Scatliffe edged the Lumberjack duo of Orsi Golovics and Edit Suhajda in No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-6. Simic then outlansted Golovics at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles contests were even closer than the decision at No. 1. NAU took the No. 2 doubles point when Aimee Oki and Stephanie Vallejos edged Jill Damion and Asagi Onaga, 9-8. The Gauchos clinched the point when Tova Hausman and Brittany Kausen narrowly nipped Stacey Pinchbeck and Leslie Vial, 9-8.
In addition to Simic's win at No. 1 singles, UCSB players logged wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. At No. 4, Onaga needed three sets to defeat Pinchbeck, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. At No. 5, Hausman nipped Porter, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. Damion, Scatliffe, and Kausen each dropped their singles matches.
The Gauchos, now 4-2 on the year, return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Tucson, to face the University of Arizona in a match that will begin at 10:00 a.m. (PT).
