UC Santa Barbara, Calif. - UCSB Edges Fresno Pacific, 4-3
The UCSB women's tennis team got back on the winning track Wednesday afternoon with a hard fought 4-3 win over NAIA power Fresno Pacific. The Gauchos spoiled a perfect season for the Sunbirds, handing them their first loss of the year.
The day started slowly as the Gauchos dropped the top two doubles matches and went into singles play trailing 1-0.
Bryanna Ojeda quickly took care of that deficit by dismantling her opponent 6-0, 6-1. Jill Damion, Sofia Novak, and Asagi Onaga all followed with straight set victories. Jill and Asagi both won tough first set tiebreakers and Sofia had to hang on in her second set to pull off the win.
After the UCSB women had clinched the match, Fresno Pacific won the last two matches to narrow the final score to 4-3.
"It was just what we needed after a tough weekend," coach Pete Kirkwood said. "Our goal is to build on this win, establish some momentum and get on a roll."
The Gauchos improve to 5-3 overall (1-3 Big West) while Fresno Pacific drops to 7-1 overall.
Next up for UCSB is San Jose St. on Saturday Feb. 28 at 11:00 a.m. The match will take place at home on the Rob Gym Tennis courts.
