Feb. 25, 2008
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team took care of business this afternoon as they defeated Eastern Michigan 6-1, at the Rob Gym Tennis Courts. The Gauchos took control early of the match by sweeping the doubles point from the Eagles. This was the fourth match out of five this year that UCSB has swept the doubles point from an opponent.
The senior pair of Marta Simic and Charlotte Scatliffe continued their dominance in doubles play, bouncing the Eagle pair of Vanessa Frankowski and Tina Bestehorn 8-1 at the No. 1 spot. At the No. 2 slot, freshman Jill Damion and sophomore partner Asagi Onaga defeated Sandra Wikstrom and Aleksandra Stankovic 8-4. Completing the sweep for the Gauchos was senior Brittany Kausen and sophomore Tova Hausman as they dropped the Eagle duo of Joanna Woo and Aditi Krishnan 8-5, at the No. 3 position.
"We feel like doubles is our strength," said head coach Pete Kirkwood. We feel like we can win the doubles point against anyone on our schedule right now.
The Gauchos kept the momentum going into singles play taking five out of six matches. Charlotte Scatliffe wasted no time at the No. 3 slot trouncing the Eagles Sandra Wikstrom 6-0, 6-1, to give the Gauchos the early 2-0 advantage in the match. Jill Damion prevailed with ease in her match at No. 2, posting a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Aditi Krishnan. Brittany Kausen clinched the match for UCSB with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Joanna Woo at the No. 6 spot. Tova Hausman and Marta Simic followed by battling back from a set down to both prevail in three sets.
"The main thing I like about the girls is that they're taking risks," said head coach Pete Kirkwood. They're not backing off or playing tentative, they're really playing aggressive and that's what it's going to take as we start to play some of the higher-ranked teams."
The Gauchos will travel to Arizona this weekend for three matches. Friday the Gauchos will play in Flagstaff against Northern Arizona University. Saturday UCSB will be at #38 Arizona and Sunday will be at #19 Arizona State.
