Cal Poly Rallies To Upset 68th-Ranked Gauchos 4-3

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - In a battle between Central Coast rivals who both entered Monday undefeated in Big West Conference play, Cal Poly upset 68th-ranked UC Santa Barbara 4-3 on the Mustang Courts.
Thanks to their come-from-behind win, the Mustangs improved to 4-4 overall and 3-0 in league play. Meanwhile the Gauchos saw their four-match winning streak snapped, falling to 4-3 and 2-1.
Cal Poly began the day by capturing the doubles point as Samantha Waller and Danon Beatty defeated Charolette Scatliffe and Andrea Pintar, 8-6 and Carol Erickson teamed with Shannon Brady to knock off Leslie Damion and Mio Fukushima, 6-0, 7-5. In the No. 2 court UCSB's Chelsea Glynn and Murielle Gruenig defeated Sheila Lewis and Maria Malec, 8-1.
Sana Barbara then pulled ahead in singles action when Gruenig posted a 7-5, 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot and Glynn was also impressive at No. 2, prevailing 6-3, 6-4 over Beatty.
Cal Poly came storming back, however, as the Mustangs won three of the four remaining matches including Erickson defeating Pintar in the No. 3 position, 6-3, 6-1, Brady defeating Fukushima 6-0, 7-5 in the No. 6 court and a dramatic come-from-behind victory for Lewis in the No. 4 position, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) over Scatliffe. The Mustang senior trailed 4-0 in the third set before battling back. In the No. 5 spot, Leslie Damion defeated Malec in an back-and-forth match, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
The Gauchos return to action this weekend, facing several teams in the UNLV Tournament Friday, Feb. 24 through Sunday, Feb. 26.
