Santa Barbara, Calif. - The 73rd-ranked UCSB women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision against St. Mary's Thursday at home. The Gauchos took wins at No. 1 doubles, No. 3 singles, and No. 4 singles, but it wasn't enough to top the Gaels.
The Gauchos dropped to 1-1 on the young season. St. Mary's, which opened its season with a 6-1 win over Pacific Feb. 3, upped its mark to 2-2.
UCSB freshman Tova Hausman picked up two victories on the afternoon. She teamed with classmate Carina Bjornstrom to defeat Aude Lambert and Jessica Hoath, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. In the No. 3 singles match, Hausman topped Nienke Strijbis in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-3.
Hausman and Bjornstrom got the call at No. 1 doubles as junior Marta Simic, who played No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles in a win over Santa Clara Feb. 3, was sidelined with a leg injury.
Charlotte Scatliffe, Simic's partner, played No. 2 doubles with Kristen Wilson and lost, 8-2, against Femke and Nienke Strijbis. Scatliffe was bumped up to No. 2 singles and suffered a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Hoath as St. Mary's won four of six singles match-ups.
At No. 1, Lambert defeated Bjornstrom 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Asagi Onaga got UCSB's second singles win with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Erin Young in the No. 4 match.
UCSB hosts Loyola Marymount, its third consecutive West Coast Conference opponent, Feb. 10 at 11 a.m.
