Gauchos Drop Season-Opener at 56th-Ranked Sacramento State, 6-1

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team earned the doubles point in Saturday's season-opening match at Sacramento State, but the Gauchos failed to win a singles match and lost by a score of 6-1.

UCSB swept through the doubles competition. Seniors Charlotte Scatliffe and Marta Simic edged the Hornet pair of Katrina Zheltova and Luba Schifris, 8-6, to win at No. 1 doubles. Freshman Jill Damion, making her debut for UCSB, teamed with sophomore Asagi Onaga, to defeate Anastassia Lyssenko/Aileen Tsan, 8-6. In No. 3 doubles, sophomore Tova Hausman and senior Brittany Kausen defeated Melissa Valenzuela and Joyce Martinez, 8-6.

The singles contests were a totally different story.

Zheltova, ranked 63rd nationally, blanked Simic, 6-1, 6-1. Valenzuela swept Scatliffe, 6-3, 7-5, and Lyssenko dropped the Gaucho star freshman, Damion, 6-3, 6-3.

The bottom of the draw as equally as effective for Sacramento State. Schifris swept Onaga, 7-5, 6-2, and Tsan blew past Hausman,6-1, 6-4. At No. 6 singles, Karina Jarlkaganova topped Kausen, 7-5, 6.1.

The Gauchos remain on the road for the next match. UCSB will travel to Big West opponent Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Feb. 8, at 1:30 p.m. Santa Barbara will play its first home match on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 11:00 a.m. when it hosts Texas-San Antonio.
