Jan. 22, 2010
Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team showed up ready to play in their first dual match of the season, but came up short against a tough Arizona State team. The Gauchos were defeated 5-1 by the team ranked 30th in the ITA national rankings. Despite the loss, head coach Pete Kirkwood was happy with what he saw.
"Everyone played really well. I'm pleased with what we did today. We have a lot of depth this year and we are fired up and ready to go," said the Gaucho head coach after the opening match of the season.
Sofia Novak went down at the No. 1 position in a hard fought battle against the nation's 58th ranked singles player, Kelcy McKenna (6-4, 6-2).
"Sofia has a big forehand and is playing great," said Kirkwood. "She just went up against a great player today."
Natalia Lozano, playing from the No. 2 slot, won the first game against Nadia Abdala, but would eventually fall (3-6, 6-3, 7-6). Arizona State's Hannah James knocked off Asagi Onaga (6-4, 6-3) in No. 3 singles.
The only Gaucho victory on the day came from Annabel Gledden, playing in her first collegiate dual match. She played from the No. 4 slot, defeating Ashlee Brown (2-6, 6-2, 6-1).
Jordan Dockendorf lost to Arizona State's Sianna Simmons in two heartbreaking sets (7-6, 7-5) in the No. 5 position. In the No. 6 position, Erica Cano battled hard, but could not overcome Amanda Martin (6-2, 7-5).
No doubles were played because of the threat of rain.
The Gauchos will play tomorrow at the University of Arizona at 10:00 a.m.
