Santa Barbara, Calif. – For the second consecutive week, a member of the UCSB women's tennis team has earned the Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week award.
The recipient of this week's conference honor is senior Palina Dubavets. It is the first athlete of the week award for the senior this season, who has been recognized for her performance over the course of the Gauchos' three matches last week.
In UC Santa Barbara's Tuesday match against Southern Methodist University, Dubavets tallied a singles victory over SMU's Anzhelika Shapovalova in three sets 7-6, 2-6, 10-7. Helping set the tone to such a performance was the success Dubavets and her doubles partner, senior Natalie Da Silveira, had when playing with one another.
Playing as the ITA's No. 57 ranked doubles pair, Dubavets and Da Silveira earned a 6-4 win over SMU's Karina Traxler and Sarai Monarrez.
UCSB's senior tandem continued their dominance with a 6-2 over the University of Arizona's duo of Mary Lewis and Marie Van Aelst on Friday. Dubavets built on the win with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Lewis in singles play as well.
Rounding out Dubavets solid weekend was the team's meting against No. 33 Arizona State. Although the Gauchos were swept 4-0, Dubavets and Da Silveira were in the midst of an intense doubles matchup against the SunDevils' combo of Fossa Huergo and Tereza Kolarova prior to the match ending with an unfinished result of 4-3, with UCSB trailing by one point.
As of Tuesday, March 6, Dubavets and Da Silveira are now No. 37 in the ITA doubles rankings. UCSB's pair has won three of their last five matches, in which two of the five have ended with an unfinished result.
