Los Angeles, Calif. – An upset victory to start the dual match season nearly came to fruition as the UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team went on the road to face No. 17 UCLA.

The Gauchos won the doubles point to begin, taking an early 1-0 lead but could not contain the Bruins in singles play and were defeated 4-2.

Setting the tone from the match's beginning was the duo of senior Amanda Atanasson and junior Stephanie Yamada, who faced the Bruins' tandem of Sophie Bendetti and Kristin Wiley.

Santa Barbara's combo was nearly unstoppable as they dominated the Bruins to secure a 6-2 win.

Evening out the score within the doubles point on UCLA's end were partners Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield. They were matched up against UCSB's freshman unit of Lise Sentenac and Elizaveta Volodko.

While Sentenac and Volodko fared well during the fall season, their dual match debuts proved to be more difficult as the Bruins' pair made quick work of the two, earning a 6-2 win.

Following the result, the doubles point was up for grabs. Such circumstances came down to the pairs playing on court No.1. Going head-to-head were UCSB's pair Palina Dubavets and Natalie Da Silveira against UCLA's Terri Fleming and Jada Hart.

The matchup met expectations of being an intense match as both teams traded points. But the momentum of the match eventually shifted in favor of the Gauchos, who concluded things with a 6-4 victory and earned UCSB's 1-0 match lead.

Yet, sustaining the momentum from this lead was something that UC Santa Barbara was unable to do once singles play began.

It wasn't until the Bruins had already won three matches that the Gauchos tallied their first singles win on the behalf of Yamada, who managed to beat Wiley in consecutive sets 6-3, 6-4.

Yamada's victory would end up being the Gauchos only singles win of the day as the battle between Volodko and UCLA's Abi Altick was ruled unfinished.

Despite the match not counting towards anything, it was one of the day's most most intense as Volodko was likely on her way to upsetting the No. 46 singles player in the nation.

A tiebreaker occurred in the first set, in which Volodko outlasted Altick for a 7-6 (7-4) win in the first set. The match's unfinished result concluded with UCSB's newcomer leading 4-2 in the second set.

Meanwhile, Atanasson was defeated by Bloomfield 6-2, 6-1. Da Silveira was unable to prevent her 6-2,6-4 loss to Fleming. The outcome of Sentenac's first regular season singles match ended with her losing 6-3, 6-1 to Andrews, allowing the Bruins to take a 3-2 lead.

As the Gauchos played from behind, giving them their last shot at contending was Dubavets. Playing on court No. 1, Dubavets played against Hart.

The contest between the two resulted in a quick 6-2 victory in the first set for Hart. Dubavets nearly extended things to a tiebreaker set, but was upended in the second set 7-5 as the Bruins took the 4-2 victory.

Next for the Gauchos is the University of Southern California. The Trojans are 2-0 thus far this season.

UCSB will face USC on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 10 a.m. at Marks Stadium.
