SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Palina Dubavets advanced to the Round of 16 in the singles competition at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships before falling while Dubavets and Stefani Stojic moved into the Round of 16 in the doubles competition on Friday.
Dubavets, a junior, swept Arizona's Devin Chypyha 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 32. She then lost 6-1, 6-3 to another Arizona player, top-seeded Lauren Marker, in the Round of 16.
Meanwhile, Dubavets and Stojic, the No. 1 seeded doubles team, recorded an 8-3 win over Maeva Razakasoa and Hayley Thompson of Long Beach State. The Gaucho tandem will now face Angela Kulikov and Madison Westby of USC, the No. 5 seeded team, on Saturday in the quarterfinals. A second UCSB doubles team, Melissa Baker and Stephanie Yamada, also advanced to the quarters with an 8-7 (4) win over Kiryang Kim and Emma Roehholt of Cal State Northridge.
Two other UCSB players, Natalie Da Silveira and Jaimee Gilbertson, lost their matches in the Round of 32. Da Silveira dropped a thriller to Elisa Elhadj of Cal State Northridge, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4. Gilbertson fell to USC's Madiston Westby, 6-2, 6-4.
