Gauchos Come Up Just Short; Edged by Fresno State, 4-3
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team (3-10, 2-1) took the courts earlier today as the team hosted Fresno State (5-8, 1-0). After prevailing with a big conference win against UC Davis yesterday, Santa Barbara returned to non-conference play looking to add another win to its record. At the end of the day, the Bulldogs pulled out a narrow 4-3 victory.
The day started off slow for the Gauchos as the team could not pull out the doubles wins. Junior, April Scatliffe and sophomore Priscila Garcia paired up on court No. 1 but fell to the Bulldogs' pair of Anneka and Sophie Watts. On court No. 2, junior Stacy Yam and freshman Kaiulani Boyer fell, 8-4. Senior, Kiersten Meehan and sophomore Luisa Ortiz Candido paired up on court No. 3 but also endured an 8-4 loss.
Once again the Gauchos came out strong in the singles matches; causing Fresno State to battle every point. Scatliffe played a very tough match on court No. 1 today against Fresno State's Sophie Watts. Despite the strong play, the junior leader endured a tough 6-3, 6-4 loss. Freshman, Kaiulani Boyer opened her match on a high note, winning the first set 6-2. In the end, Bulldogs' sophomore, Rana Sherif Ahmed pulled off a 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory.
The highlight of the day for the Gauchos came from court No. 3 where Yam pulled off a miraculous come from behind victory. The junior not only overcame a slow first set, but also came back from a 5-2 deficit in the second and third set to record a 1-6, 7-6, 7-6 victory.
"It was great to see Stacy win on court 3 again with such a tough performance," head coach Simon Thibodeau stated.
Junior Paola Cos is continuing to string wins as she won on court No. 5 with a score of 6-0, 6-3. Along with the junior, freshman Jaimee Gilbertson is on a roll of late as the Australian native extended her win streak to five matches with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory.
"We are continuing to improve and get better with our full lineup," Thibodeau said. "Paola continues to win her matches and Jaimee is winning all of her matches on court No. 6."
Even after splitting the pair of matches this weekend, the Gauchos are coming into form as the season progresses. The Gauchos will have another tough weekend next week as the team will travel to take on No. 65 UNLV and No. 43 Columbia.
UCSB will take on the Rebels on Saturday, Mar. 15 at 10 a.m. The Gauchos will remain at UNLV the very next day to take on highly ranked Columbia which is also set for 10 a.m.
