UCSB Sweeps All Singles Matches, Cruises Past UC Davis
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— Returning home for this weekend's pair of matches, UC Santa Barbara (3-9, 2-1) aimed to claim its first home victories of the season. Facing off against Big West opponent, UC Davis (5-6, 1-2) earlier today, Santa Barbara showcased its best performance thus far in the dual match season. Despite a shaky performance in the doubles matches, UCSB came out strong in the singles matches resulting in a 6-1 victory over the Aggies.
Davis came out on top as the team won the doubles matches on courts 1 and 2. The lone doubles victory came from the pairing of junior Stacy Yam and sophomore Priscila Garcia as the duo recorded an 8-4 win.
Facing the uphill battle due to the early deficit, UCSB showed no signs of pressure as the team played the singles matches beautifully.
"We came out really strong in the singles matches today; especially on the first three courts," said UCSB head coach Simon Thibodeau. "It is a good win against a good rival and a good team in our conference."
Junior, April Scatliffe displayed her power and finesse on court No. 1 once again as she delivered an impressive 7-5, 6-1 win. Freshman, Kaiulani Boyer also played a strong match on court No. 2 today as she posted a 6-0, 7-5 victory. Junior, Stacy Yam cruised to victory today as she posted an unblemished 6-0, 6-0 score.
Senior, Kiersten Meehan returned to action today on court No. 4. After shaking off a rusty first set, Meehan came out on top with a solid victory of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Junior Paola Cos posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory while freshman, Jaimee Gilbertson finished her match with an impressive score of 6-1, 6-2. Gilbertson is now riding a four match win streak in singles play.
With all the injuries and close losses so far in the season, Coach Thibodeau has been a steady presence as he is always confident with his talented squad.
"Today is our first match where we have had a full and healthy lineup," Thibodeau stated. "I always have confidence with this team. We have lost a lot of close ones, but I believe we are much better than our record indicates."
Moving forward, the Gauchos will host a talented squad tomorrow in which Coach Thibodeau is very familiar with, Fresno State (4-8, 1-0). Thibodeau turned the Bulldogs program around serving as head coach for nine years.
"It is another tough opponent tomorrow that we have to prepare for," Thibodeau said. "We will just look to get better and have extra fight against another tough opponent."
The Gauchos will take on the Bulldogs tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 9 at 10 a.m. at the Rob Gym Courts.
