SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— On the road for the past three weeks of competition, UC Santa Barbara (1-5) will play its second home tennis match of the season this Sunday morning. After competing in the Northwest against strong Pac-12 programs, Washington State and University of Washington, UCSB will host University of Pacific (2-2) this Sunday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m.
Competing against two Pac-12 schools last weekend, the Gauchos had a tough task of defeating the Cougars and the Huskies. Dealing with injuries, the team has had to deal with adversity during the early parts of the season. Despite the success of the doubles pairs for the Gauchos, both the Cougars and Huskies showcased the depth and impressive play that allowed them to defeat UCSB.
Freshman, Kaiulani Boyer stepped up last weekend; playing in both the first doubles pair alongside fellow freshman Melissa Baker against the Cougars and hitting with junior Paola Cos against the Huskies. Besides playing on court No. 1 for the doubles match, Boyer also seeded as the number one singles player for the Gauchos. Coach Thibodeau and the rest of the squad will continue to monitor Boyer's development as she is showcasing her potential and impressive talent.
Junior, April Scatliffe continues to shine and provide the Gauchos with a competitive edge. Playing as the number two, Scatliffe nearly won her singles match against No. 41 Washington, but eventually lost in a tight three set match.
The Gauchos will continue to get healthy once again and have the team at full strength before conference play begins. Big West conference action starts off next weekend as the Gauchos will be on the road once again to face off against UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton.
