SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team (0-2) will begin the three week road expedition as the team will take on Loyola Marymount (1-1) and No. 61 University of San Diego (0-2). UCSB will battle against the Lions this Saturday, Feb. 1st at 11 a.m., and then travel to San Diego the very next day to face off against the Torreros at 10 a.m.
Opening the 2014 dual match campaign with matches against No. 5 UCLA and University of San Francisco, the Gauchos have been tested early with tough and grueling matches. UCSB even had to battle the weather conditions as the team's match against the Dons last weekend caused an hour rain delay; disrupting the rhythm of all players on the court.
Despite the losses, the Gauchos showcased several bright spots that could have turned the end results around. With three matches having tie breakers last weekend, UCSB had an opportunity to put pressure on San Francisco's squad. Freshman, Melissa Baker highlighted the day's action last weekend as she battled hard and forced a third set in her enticing match.
Suffering defeats against the Bruins and Dons the past two weekends, the Gauchos will look to retain a high level of play and get wins against LMU and San Diego this weekend.
Senior Kiersten Meehan played as No. 1 Singles while junior April Scatliffe was playing at No. 2 singles last weekend. With the depth and talent of the Gauchos' squad, the team will continue to be competitive and improve as the season goes on.
