FULLERTON, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara sophomore April Scatliffe and freshman Priscilla Garcia each won a pair of singles matches on Friday, advancing to the "A" Flight singles semifinals at the 2012 Cal State Fullerton Fall Intercollegiate.
Scatliffe recorded an opening round win over UC Irvine's Marivick Mamiit, 6-4, 6-4, and then she swept Long Beach State's Eva Rodriguez in the second round, 6-3, 7-5. Garcia topped Portland's State's Mandy Mallen, 6-1, 7-5, and then swept past Concordia's Elizabeth Ignatova, 6-0, 6-2.
Scatliffe will play Cal State Los Angeles' Leora Hemmerich on Saturday for a chance to advance to the semifinals while Garcia takes on Loyola Marymount's Tory Parravi. If both Gaucho players with, they will play each other for a chance to advance to Sunday's title match.
UCSB's Kiersten Meehan had a bye into the second round of the "A" Flight, but lost her first match to LMU's April Bisharat, 6-2, 6-2. Paola Cos dropped a match by the same score to Christie Lau of Cal State Los Angeles.
In the "B" Flight, another Gaucho duo advanced to the semifinals. Stacey Yam recorded wins over Kelsey Frey (Portland State) and 7-6, 6-0 over Malorie Dela Cruz (Cal State Fullerton). Erica Cano swept Fullerton's Jessica Pepa, 6-1, 6-2, and Cal State Northridge's Leslie Chang, 6-2, 6-3.
Two Gaucho doubles teams dropped their first matches in the "A" Flight Doubles. Garcia/Scatliffe lost to Facey/Gong of UC Irvine, 8-3, while Cos/Meehan were beaten by Long Beach State's Rozenberg/Willems, 8-4.
In the "B" Flight Doubles, Yam/Cano moved into the second round with an 8-3 win over Staheli/Skaras of Southern Utah.
Play will continue throughout the day on Saturday.
