Gauchos Sweep Past St. John's, 6-0
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team parlayed the doubles point and a sweep of the four completed singles matches into its second straight win, 6-0 over visiting St. John's on Monday afternoon.
UCSB claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The match at No. 2 was left unfinished as the teams hoped to complete the singles competition before rain set in.
At No. 1 singles, Jordan Dockendorf and Kiersten Meehan defeated Ece Firat and Diamond Adams, 8-5. At No. 3, Erica Cano and Sofia Novak swept past Joanna Zwirbulis and Terri Thomas, 8-0. UCSB's No. 2 team of April Scatliffe and Natalia Lozano were leading 7-4 when their match was called.
Only four of the six singles matches were completed. At No. 4, Scatliffe led 5-0 when the Red Storm's Fiat had to retire win an injury, giving the Gauchos a 2-0 lead.
The second match off the courts was at No. 5 where Cos defeated Nakita Austin 6-1, 6-0. At No. 6, Dockendorf blanked Lyubov Pogirbnyak, 6-1, 6-1, to give UCSB a 4-0 lead and the victory.
Meehan defeated Zwirbulis at No. 3 and Novak topped Adams at No. 2. Both matches were won by scores of 6-3, 6-2. The No. 1 singles match was stopped because of rain with St. John's Nevena Selakovic leading the Gauchos' Natalia Lizano, 6-1, 5-4.
The win was the second in a row for UCSB, which is now 4-7 on the season. The Red Storm drops to 0-8.
