SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team battled on day two of the Gaucho Classic on Saturday afternoon and the Gauchos got mixed results.
The Gauchos started the day well in the A flight doubles with No. 1 seeds Natalia Lozano and
Jordan Dockendorf storming back from 4-7 down to pull out a 9-8 (3) tie-break win in their semi final match. On Sunday, they play Veronic Popovici and Simona Synkova from Wyoming in a 9:00 AM final.
Gauchos Natalia Lozano and Sofia Novak each advanced to the semi final round of the singles competition, but were beaten in that round. Novak lost a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 decision to Wyoming's Popovici, while Novak dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Loyola Marymount's Miya Jin.
In another singles match, UCSB's Casey Reede lost to Hannah Stone of Northern Arizona in the semifinals, 7-6, 6-1.
Gauchos Kiersten Meehan/April Scatlifffe advanced to the A doubles semifinals with an 8-1 win over their Loyola Marymount opponents before losing to Popovici/Synkova, 8-3.
Paola Cos rebounded from a tough opening round loss (a three set match against Jin) and earned a spot in the "A" consolation final with two solid wins Saturday.
The Gauchos struggled in "B" flight competition Saturday. Katerina Mozolyuk fell to Cal Poly's Ane McPike in a tough quarter final match. Mozolyuk was then defeated by Wyoming's Alexandra
Kovachs in a consolation match.
Jordan Dockendorf advanced to the semifnal round of the consolation before falling to Cal Poly's Jocelyn Davis.
The Gauchos doubles team of Casey Reede/Mozolyuk fell 8-2 in the B flight doubles.
In the C flight Stacy Yam and Casey Reede both ended up on the short end of the score in their semi final matches. Erica Cano rebounded from her opening day loss to win both her matches Saturday and earn a spot in the consolation final. Cano and Yam are also in the Consolation doubles final.
"At this point in the year the most important thing for us to do is get match tough," said UCSB head coach Peter Kirkwood. "The Gauchos are proving that we are up to the challenge. Five matches in three days and we are still ready to go for tomorrow. We hope to finish big on Sunday and establish a habit of winning as we head into the ITA West Regional."
The Gauchos will travel to the ITA West Regional in San Diego, Calif., from Oct. 20-24.
On Sunday, all matches will be FINALS with Doubles starting at 9:00 AM. The singles will start 15 minutes after doubles are completed.
