SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team, ranked 62nd in the nation in 2011, has been named as a Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Academic All-American Team for the 2010-11 season.
To earn a spot in the elite field, a team must have earned an overall 3.2 grade point average for the year. Each of the 12 Gaucho on the roster were over a 3.0 for the spring quarter and the team grade point average was an outstanding 3.40.
Individual Academic All-American honors were earned by freshman Paola Cos, who completed her first year at UCSB with a 4.0 grade point average. Jill Damion, who graduated in June, also earned Academic All-American status.
"I am very proud of the team," said head coach Pete Kirkwood. "We are proud to respect academics and competitive athletics as stepping stones to being great leaders and role models for others."
On Oct. 7-9, UCSB will host the second annual Gaucho Classic. The nine-team tournament will offer three flights in singles and doubles. The eight visiting schools will be Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Arizona, Colorado State, Wyoming and Portland State.
