Senior swimmer Anne Marie May earned the Counsilman Hunsaker National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week award, it was announced by CollegeSwimming.com on Thursday. The honor comes after she had a phenomenal showing at the Finis Collegiate Invitational at Belmont Plaza.
May's best swim was in the 50 freestyle when she captured first place with a time of 22.34 seconds, which is the fastest time by a women's collegiate swimmer so far this season.
The time is also one of five NCAA "B" qualifying standards she achieved during the three-day meet.
May had an additional individual win in the 100 free, posting a time of 49.44 (a "B" cut). She took second in the 100 breaststroke, posting a time of 1:03.85.
The senior also assisted the Gaucho relays to four first-place finishes. In the 200 free relay, she led-off with a mark of 22.70 as the team posted a "B" qualifying time of 1:31.94. The Gauchos also achieved NCAA consideration times in the 400 medley relay (3:46.27) and 400 free relay (3:23.34). UCSB rounded out its top finishes with a first place 200 medley relay (1:43.58) with May swimming the breaststroke leg.
UCSB edged out UNLV to capture the meet title.
In addition to this award, May was also named the Golden 1 Credit Union/UCSBgauchos.com Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week.
