SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - For the second time in three weeks UC Santa Barbara senior Jennifer Schwalb nabbed Big West Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week honors, for the week ending Oct. 29.
Last weekend the Gauchos competed in a pair of dual meets at the University of Hawai'i, with the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex hosting a 13-event meet on Friday, followed by a 16-event meet on Saturday. At the two events, Schwalb claimed three first place and two second place titles in the individual events. The Ridgecrest, Calif., native also swam a leg of the 200 medley relay that placed first.
On Friday, Oct. 27, Schwalb swam a time of 2:01.65 in the 200 fly to grab the top honor and took second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.10, proving her versatility and strengths.
The following day she bettered her time in the 200 fly, by two-tenths of a second, to register her second first-place mark in that event. Schwalb also proved successful in the 100 fly, posting a first-place time of 56.15. Swimming the fly leg of the 200 IM relay, she guided the Gauchos to the meet's top time.
After finishing second in the 200 IM on Friday, Saturday she competed in the 400 IM and mirrored her efforts from the previous day with a second-place time of 4:30.88.
As a team, the Gauchos, who could not make up the points lost to Hawai'i in the diving events, fell to the Rainbow Warriors by a scores of 124-109 (10/27) and 148-143 (10/28).
Scwalb earned her first Big West Athlete of the Week honor for the week ending Oct. 16 after posting impressive times in the 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 IM. Competing against Pac-10 powers UCLA and Oregon State, the Gaucho senior took first place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.77. She also swam a time of 2:05.59 in the 200 fly to finish in third. In her final event, the Ridgecrest, Calif, native placed a fifth-best time of 58.1 in the 100 fly.
