SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara swimmer Katy Freeman has been named to the 2009 World University Games roster it was announced on Wednesday by USA Swimming. Freeman, who is entering her senior year at UCSB, will compete in the swimming competition that will take place July 11-15 in Belgrade, Serbia.
A total of 26 swimmers were named to the 2009 World University Games swim team roster. In past years, the World University Games has been a breeding ground for some of the best swimming talent in the nation. Many Olympic swimmers have at one time been a member of the World University Games team and most recently, the 2007 U.S. World University Games team saw three members go on to compete in the 2008 Olympics. These three swimmers - Matt Greevers, Emily Silver and Elaine Breeden - all took home Olympic hardware from Beijing.
Swimmers on the 2009 World University Games team roster were selected based upon their performance at the 2008 USA Swimming U.S. Open Championships that took place July 29 through Aug. 2 in Minneapolis, Minn. Freeman took third-place in the 200-meter breaststroke touching the wall in 2:29.68 helping her qualify for the team and also took fifth-place in the 100-meter breast at the U.S. Open with a time of 1:09.55. She will swim three distances at the World University Games: the 50, 100 and 200 breast events.
All athletes selected for the team must be between the ages of 17-28 as of Jan. 2009. In addition, those selected must be student-athletes who will be officially enrolled in a full-time course study at an approved institution of higher education prior to the entry deadline, or enrolled as a full-time university student through Jan. 1, 2009. All members of the World University Games team roster are pending final approval by the United States Olympic Committee.
Being named to the World University Games roster is just one more highlight during a standout year for Freeman. In February, she helped lead the Gauchos to its 12th Big West Conference title after setting two school records and taking three individual titles at the conference championships.
Following her stellar performance at the Big West Championships, she kept things rolling at the NCAA Championships where she helped the Gauchos to a 25th place national finish and earned All-American Honorable Mention accolades.
Freeman also competed in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials at which she qualified for the 200 breast semifinals.
Freeman, who is a 2008-09 team captain, and the rest of the Gauchos will begin their new season on Saturday, Oct. 4 when they host their annual Alumni Meet at Campus Pool at 10:00 a.m.
