Former Gaucho Jason Lezak Resets American Record in 100 Freestyle, Katy Freeman Qualifies for 200 Breaststroke Semifinal at Olympic Trials

OMAHA, Neb. - Former UC Santa Barbara swimmer Jason Lezak is seeded first in Thursday evening's 100-meter freestyle final at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials after resetting the American record in the event during Wednesday night's semifinals. Current Gaucho Katy Freeman swam her way to a spot in tonight's session as well, qualifying for the 200-meter breaststroke semifinals.

Lezak, who has medaled at the last two Olympic games, set his second American record of the day in the 100 free semifinals on Wednesday evening, touching the wall in 47.58. He reclaimed his record after Garrett Weber-Gale swam the event in 47.78 in the morning preliminaries, beating out Lezak's 48.15 from the prior heat.

Lezak is scheduled to swim in lane four of tonight's 100-meter freestyle final, the top-four swimmers in the event automatically qualify for the Olympic Games.

In Wednesday morning's prelims, current Gauchos Bradley Matsumoto and Scott Vogelgesang joined Lezak. Matsumoto finished 95th with a time of 51.54 while Vogelgesang finished 113th with a mark of 52.14

Travis Jepson also swam yesterday morning, finishing 42nd in the 200 breaststroke with a time o f 2:19.40.

Chris Good opened the action for the Gauchos on Thursday morning, swimming the 200 backstroke in 2:02.64, good for 28th overall. It marked Good's second top-30 performance of the week; he finished 23rd in 400 IM on Sunday.

This morning ended on a high-note as Katy Freeman took 16th place in the 200-meter breaststroke prelims, just making the cut for tonight's semifinals in the event. Freeman clocked in at 2:02.64. She will swim in the first of tonight's two semifinal heats in lane eight.

Her teammate, Sara Nicponski, finished the 200 breast in 43rd with a time of 2:34.57.
