Senior Anne Marie May has been picked as the UCSBgauchos.com Athlete of the Week after placing 20th in the 50 freestyle and 37th in the 100 free at the 2010 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships last week at Purdue's Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
Making her fourth consecutive appearance at the national championships, May finished the 50 free in 22.52 seconds, just missing out on Honorable Mention All-American accolades by .05 seconds on Thursday. On Saturday, she finished the 100 free in 49.71 seconds.
May finished her collegiate career as one of the most accomplished swimmers in UCSB history. The two-time Big West Women's Swimmer of the Year won the 50 free conference title all four years of her career and won three straight 100 free titles. An injury at this year's championships prevented her from completing a four-year sweep in the 100.
The Carmel, Calif. native's career with the Gauchos was filled with big moments, some of the highlights include her third place finish at the 2008 NCAA Championships in the 50 freestyle, competing in the 2008 Olympic Trials and holding the nation's top-time in the 50 free for several weeks this season.
May will leave UCSB as the school and Big West record holder in the 50 free (21.96), 100 free (48.83), 200 free relay (1:30.30), 400 free relay (3:18.76), 200 medley relay (1:38.40) and 400 medley relay (3:37.87).
