SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara captured both Big West swimming honors this week, sweeping the weekly awards to bring its season count to six honorees (two men, four women). Senior Naomi Javanifard was named Female Swimmer of the Week and sophomore Kevin Ferguson was named Male Swimmer of the Week it was announced by the conference Wednesday.
Ferguson, a native of Sacramento, Calif., was instrumental in the Gauchos' victory over No. 22 UNLV on Saturday. The sophomore finished first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.95 and took second in the 100 free (46.43). Ferguson also was on two first place relays, swimming a 23.45 backstroke split in the 200 medley relay and a 45.73 (unofficial) anchor split in the 400 free relay.
Javanifard, another native of Sacramento, helped lead the Gaucho women to their victory over the visiting Rebels. The senior took first place in the 100 back (56.58) during the final home meet of her collegiate career and also took second in the 50 free (23.63). She also helped the UCSB women to wins in the 200 medley relay - with a 26.19 backstroke split - and in the 400 free relay, with a 51.95 split.
The Gaucho men and women head north this week for a pair of Big West road meets. UCSB will swim at UC Davis on Friday and close out 2010 dual meet action at Pacific on Saturday.
