SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara's women's swimming team opened up their regular season at Campus Pool Saturday afternoon against Pac- 10 conference schools UCLA and Oregon State. The Gauchos beat the Beavers, 155-107 but lost to UCLA, 160 to 102.
The defending Big West Champions started the meet on a high note by winning the 400 medley relay. Jessica Cruzat, Sara Nicponski, Erin Yamamoto, and Anne Marie May won with a time of 3:49.65. Courtney Bauer, Nadia Dwidar, Yamamoto, and May finished second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:29.58), losing to UCLA.
UCSB was able to attain two individual wins against both teams. Last season's Big West Freshman of the Year, May swam to a first place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.64. She also came in second in the 50 free, finishing in 24.13. Junior Cruzat had the other first place finish, winning the 100 backstroke in 56.36. She also placed second in the 200 back (2:02.08) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:08.46).
UCLA had several double event winners including Nicolette Teo, taking the 100 breast (1:03.34) and 200 breast (2:17.24), and Anna Poteete dominating the 50 (23.53) and 200 free (1:51.31). Oregon State had a couple of double first place finishers as well. Kayla Rawlings won the 200 (2:03.14) and 100 fly (57.00) and Saori Haruguchi took the 200 IM (2:03.58) and 200 backstroke (2:00.48).
Junior Yamamoto was second place in the 100 fly (57.12) and Katy Freeman raced to second in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.24). Freshman Sara Nicponski started off her UCSB career on the right foot by placing second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.14 and fourth in the 200 breastat 2:22.22. Adding second place points was Dwidar in the 100 free, finishing at 52.75.
In other Campus Pool action, UCLA also defeated Oregon State, 155-107.
The Gauchos take to the pool again Friday, Oct. 26 in Tempe, Ariz. as UCSB faces Arizona State and Utah in a non-conference meet.
