LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's and women's swim teams suffered a pair of dual meet losses to USC on Saturday afternoon at the Trojan's McDonald's Swim Stadium. The men fell 120-85 and the USC women defeated the Gauchos, 112-88.
With the losses, the men's team falls to 3-1 in dual meet action this season while the women fall to 4-2 overall.
Between the two teams, the Gauchos grabbed six first-place finishes. After being shutout from the top spot in the first six events, junior Anne Marie May broke up the Trojan domination when she won the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.10.
The Gaucho men continued their domination in the sprint events when Joe Wood and Matsumoto went one-two in the 100 free. Wood finished in 45.40, beating out Matsumoto by .01 seconds.
Senior Chris Good picked up first place in the 200 backstroke, finishing in 1:50.06. Then in the 200 breaststroke, Travis Jepson rounded out the Gaucho individual first place finishes for the day, touching the wall in 2:05.07.
The Gaucho women's "A" relay team concluded the meet with the top finish in the 400 free relay. The crew consisting of Nadia Dwidar, Naomi Javanifard, Courtney Bauer and May took first with a time of 3:25.37.
The Gauchos will return to Campus Pool next Saturday, Jan. 17 for their first home meet of 2009 when they host Big West Conference foe UC Davis at noon. Admission, as always, is free to all UCSB home swim meets.
