LOS ANGELES, Calif. – For their debut meet of the season, the women of UC Santa Barbara competed in the 2016 UCLA Breast Cancer Awareness multi-way dual meet against the women of UCLA, University of San Diego, UC Davis, Oregon State University, and Florida Gulf Coast University. The Gaucho women earned a win against USD, 136-94, and Oregon State, 129-75, but fell to UCLA, 133-66, UC Davis, 121-83, and Florida Gulf Coast, 131.5-72.5.
The women started the meet off with a seventh-place finish from UCSB's "A" team (3:51.45) in the 400 medley relay. Catherine Boles led off with backstroke (58.17), followed by Heaven Quintana (1:02.72) in breaststroke, Madelyn Johnson (58.11) in butterfly, and anchor Leanne Sun (52.45) with freestyle. Quintana's breaststroke split was the fastest of the meet.
Alyssa Shew (2:07.58), placed sixth in the 200 IM, edging out Florida's Hannah Wittman in seventh (2:07.97).
In a tight race, freshman Melissa Mullis (2:04.71) placed sixth in the 200 yard backstroke, beating out two Florida Gulf Coast swimmers close behind in seventh and eighth places.
Heaven Quintana (2:19.40) capped off her first collegiate meet with a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke. Alyssa Shew took third (2:20.17), beating out Kristin Schumann (2:20.86) of UC Davis. Brittany Straw (2:22.47) took sixth and An Nguyen (2:23.45) took eighth.
The UCSB women will join the men's team next weekend at Campus Pool on Saturday, Oct. 29, to face off against the men and women of Cal Poly SLO.
