Ward Named Swimmer of the Year, Wilson Named Coach of the Year as Gauchos Finish Second in MPSF Championships

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. –On the final day of the MPSF Championships the Gauchos were unable to catch UC Davis (712.5) for first place but settled for a second place finish with a final score of 638. Senior Andrea Ward earned swimmer of the year honors for the second time in her career. She earned swimmer of the year in her sophomore season and is the third consecutive Gaucho to earn the award. Sophia Yamauchi earned the honor last year.

Head coach Gregg Wilson was named MPSF Coach of the Year for the second time in three years. He is also a 27-time Big West Coach of the Year honoree.

Ward set another school record on the third day of the championships winning the 200 yard butterfly in 1:55.79, defeating her previous best time of 1:59.16 set in 2012. Ward has set three school records at the MPSF Championships.

Allie Knight came in second place in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:57.92. Sophia Yamauchi swam a 50.64 in the 100 yard freestyle, good for third place in the championship finals. In the championships of the 200 yard breaststroke, Katie Record came in second place with a time of 2:13.58.

In the championships of platform diving, Mariah Renteria scored 186.65, good for seventh place. Caila Baltas came in ninth with a score of 185.05.
