Gauchos Sweep Relays on Day One of MPSF Championships

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – The Gauchos came out firing on day one of the MPSF championships, winning the women's 200 and 800 medley relays at East Los Angeles Community College. Wednesday featured only two events and the women's relay teams led by senior Andrea Ward came out first in both.

Ward was joined by Allison Knight, Katie Records, and Sophia Yamauchi in taking the 200 medley relay in 1:39.87. The 200 medley relay came down to two hundreths of a second between first place UCSB and 2nd place UC Davis who came in at 1:39.89. In the 800 freestyle relay Ward teamed with Heren Alanis, Monica Garcia, and Anne Peanasky to swim a 7:16.42.

Wards 200 yard split of 1:47.03 in the 800 freestyle relay is a new school record, topping her previous mark of 1:48.55 in 2011. Also, the 800 freestyle time of 7:16.42 is good for a school record beating the previous mark set in 2012 by Ward, Alanis, Peanasky, and Hunt.

The Gauchos could not have gotten off to a better start at the MPSF championships. The meet will resume tomorrow morning with the women's 500 free prelims at 10:00am.
