Gauchos Fall to Davis; Defeat University of the Pacific

Davis, Calif. – The UCSB women's swimming and diving team fell to UC Davis in a dual meet on Friday, January 24th. The final score was 126-174. The Gauchos regrouped on Saturday and defeated University of the Pacific, 156-105 in Stockton, California. The men's swim team was also in action on Saturday against UOP and won decisively, 183-79.

In the dual against UC Davis, senior Andrea Ward won the 100 and 200 yard butterfly in 54.14 and 1:58.88, respectively. Ward also came in second in the 100 free at 51.63. Senior captain, Allison Knight took first place in the 200 yard backstroke. Senior, and fellow captain, Sophia Yamauchi won the 200 yard individual medley in 2:04.53.

The Gauchos found much greater success on Saturday in Stockton. To begin the meet the relay team of Knight, Katie Records, Anne Peanasky, and Yamauchi took first in the 200 yard medley in 1:43.00. Yamauchi took 1st in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke in 57.63 and 2:03.02. Carissa Metcalf swam a 1:05.12, good for first in the 100 yard breaststroke. Knight continued her winning ways with a victory in the 200 yard butterfly in 2:05.54. Records swam to victory in the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:21.11.

In the 400 yard individual medley, Heren Alanis took first in 4:30.96. Finally, the relay team of Monica Garcia, Hollace Barden, Meghan Bicomong, and Yamauchi took first in the 400 yard freestyle relay in 3:30.68.

The Gaucho men also were victorious in several events on Saturday. To kick off the dual, the team of Randy Aukhus, Tyler Jean, Mickey Mowry, and Wade Allen won the 200 yard medley relay in 1:32.56. Distance swimmer, Andrew Barmann won the 1000 yard freestyle in 9:28.48. Mowry won the 200 yard freestyle and 200 yard butterfly in 1:41.46 and 1:48.89, respectively. Mowry did not stop there as he took first in the 100 yard butterfly in 49.00. Andy Castilleja won the 100 yard breaststroke and 200 yard breaststroke in 56.89 and 2:03.51.

Senior Ryan Hanni had two individual victories, swimming a 20.85 in the 50 yard freestyle and 45.33 in the 100 yard freestyle. Josh Smith won the 200 yard backstroke in 1:52.01. Armen Darbinyan swam to first place in 4:37.77 in the 500 yard freestyle. Aukhus swam to victory in the 400 yard individual medley in 4:02.76.  Finally, the relay team of Chris Dotson, Chase Lemley, Lucas Norman, and Lukas Paulauskas won the 400 yard freestyle relay in 3:04.21.

Next up for the Gauchos is a home dual meet on Saturday, February 1st at Noon against rival Cal Poly- San Luis Obispo. Both men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be in action.
