2012 MID-MAJOR ALL-AMERICAN
2012 MPSF CHAMPION- 200 MEDLEY RELAY, 400 MEDLEY RELAY, 200
FREESTYLE RELAY, 200 INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
2011-12: Placed first in the
200-yard individual medley, setting a meet and school record with a
time of 1:58.56, placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke
(1:01.09), finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.41)
and helped lead the Gauchos to victories in the 200-yard medley
relay, 400-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay at
the MPSF Championships…Completed the 2011-2012 dual meet
season undefeated in all of her individual events…Continued
on to the NCAA Championships where she placed 45th
overall in the 200-yard breaststroke, 35th overall in
the 100-yard breaststroke and 44th overall in the
200-yard individual medley…Finished 110th in the
100-meter breaststroke at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

2010-11: Helped UCSB to conference titles
in the 200 medley relay (1:40.08) and the 200 free relay (1:32.33)
at the MPSF Championships…Set a new school record in the 200
individual medley (2:00.24) in which she placed third…Took
second in the 400 medley relay (3:42.12) and the 400 free relay
(3:21.53)…Also finished second in the 100 breaststroke
(1:01.18) and 200 breast (2:12.27).
HIGH SCHOOL
Attended Montgomery High School where she swam for Mark
Stanley...Earned All-American honors in the 100 breaststroke and
200 individual medley...Was named the Vikings' Swimmer of the Year
as a senior...Made the North Coast Section finals in the 100 breast
all four years of her prep career...Set Empire records in the 100
breast in 2009 and 2010...Helped lead the Vikings to the North Bay
League Championship in 2008...Swam club for Neptune Swimming and
was coached by Dan Greaves...Set a team record in 2009 in the 100
breast (1:03.11)...Placed fourth in the same event at the 2009
Summer Sectionals.
PERSONAL
Sophia Kira Yamauchi was born on March 16, 1993 in St.
Helena...Daughter of Jonathan Yamauchi and Hermine Terhorst...Has
two older sisters: Mia, who graduated from Cal, and Penelope, who
graduated and swam for Arizona State...Majoring in sociology at
UCSB...Aspires to one day work in the media or public
relations...Enjoys hanging out with friends, going to the beach,
going on bike rides and baking when not in the pool...Names "The
Princess Bride" as her favorite movie and enjoys reading the "Harry
Potter" book series...Enjoys listening to the music of John Mayer
and Jack Johnson...Names winning the 200 IM at the 2012 MPSF
Championships as her most memorable athletic achievement...Names
her older sister Penelope and her mom as her personal
heros...Favorite aspect of college swimming is being a part of
something big and competing with athletes who act as a second
family.
