SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Sophomore Sophia Yamauchi was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Athlete of the Week it was announced by the conference on Wednesday morning.
Yamauchi helped lead the Gaucho women's swimming and diving team to its fourth consecutive dual meet win last Saturday, 169-129, over visiting Cal Poly. Yamauchi won both the 100 breaststroke (1:03.19) and the 200 breast (2:16.99). She helped the 200 medley relay (1:45.50) to a first-place finish, swimming the breaststroke leg in an unofficial split of 29.02 seconds. With the meet win secured, UCSB swam its 400 free relay as an exhibition, but the Gauchos still posted the top time, touching in 3:30.64. Yamauchi anchored the relay with a split of 51.60 seconds.
Yamauchi went undefeated in individual events across the Gauchos' nine dual meets this season, which included first-place finishes in seven different events. She won the 100 breast seven times, the 200 breast on four occasions and the 100 back twice. She also had wins in the 200 back, 100 butterfly, 200 individual medley, 500 free and 400 IM. In relays, she helped the Gaucho 400 free relay and 200 medley relays to six first-place finishes each.
This is the third MPSF Athlete of the Week honor for Yamauchi this season. The Gauchos have won weekly conference honors six times this season.
UCSB will be in action next at the MPSF Championships, which will be held Feb. 15-18 at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, Calif.
