• This Week In Gaucho Softball
UCSB will conclude the season this Friday and Saturday at Campus
Diamond with its final 2011 Big West series against UC Davis. Prior
to Saturday's series finale, UCSB will honor its seniors: Jessica
Beristianos and Katie
McWhirter.
• For The Record
The Gauchos have posted a 24-26 overall record and an 8-10 mark in
Big West play. With three games left to play, UCSB still has the
opportunity to finish with a winning record for the ninth time in
the last 10 years. UCSB is currently tied for fourth place in the
league standings with Cal State Northridge.
• Two For One
The Gauchos currently rank fourth nationally for double plays per
game. They are averaging 0.59 per game and have tallied a
school-record 29 so far this season.
• Doubling Up
UCSB continues to lead the conference in doubles with 67, which is
a new school record, surpassing the 2000 squad's 64. The Gauchos'
average of 1.34 doubles per game ranks 58th nationally and Keilani
Jennings' average of 0.37 per game ranks ninth. Jennings tied
the UCSB single season doubles record (15) before suffering a
season-ending injury and she still leads all Big West players in
the category.
• About The Offense
UCSB has been one of the top teams in the league offensively all
season, ranking second in runs (214), hits (375), RBI (192) and
total bases (512). The Gaucho offense was held in check, however,
last weekend at Pacific as the Tigers limited UCSB to just five
runs over the three game series, marking its fewest in a Big West
series this season.
• Super Senior
Senior Jessica
Beristianos will play her last games as a Gaucho this weekend,
but she has already made her mark in the UCSB record books. The
third baseman tied the school record for career doubles when she
hit her 42nd at Pacific last Saturday. She ranks fourth all-time in
RBI (91) and ranks ninth in runs scored (75). Beristianos is
finishing her career in fine fashion as she has recorded a hit in
nine of the last 10 games.
• Popping Pilpils
Freshman Kathryn Pilpil has
been exemplary at getting on base this season. She has reached
safely in 47 of the 50 games this season - if you include fielder's
choices - and in each of the last 33 games. The second baseman tied
her career-high of three hits in the series opener against Pacific,
had a pair of hits in game two and drew two walks in game three.
Among Big West players, Pilpil ranks second in walks (27), sixth in
runs (31), seventh in stolen bases (10) and ninth in RBI (28). She
is batting .304 on the season and has a .344 average in Big West
games.
• Taylor Made
Junior outfielder Allison Taylor is
batting a career-best .304 this season, which is tied third on the
squad. She leads the Gauchos with 32 RBI and has had nine multiple
RBI games this season, which is also a team high. The Orange,
Calif. native has had hits in 10 of the last 11 games and has
driven in 10 runs during that span. Taylor is fifth in the Big West
in RBI and is tied for fifth in doubles (10).
• Kane Is Able
Freshman McKenzie Kane is
the team leader in batting average (.320), hits (58) and stolen
bases (13). She is the first Gaucho freshman to lead the team in
batting and hits since current assistant coach Christine Ramos did
so in 2006. The center fielder is tied for second in the Big West
in hits, is fourth in stolen bases (13) and is tied 10th in runs
(27). Kane has posted a team-high 15 multiple-hit games - including
four games with three hits - and has registered a hit in 40 of the
Gauchos' 50 games.
• In The Circle With Krista
Despite a rough pair of weekends in the circle, pitcher Krista Cobb has had a
solid Big West season. The junior has tossed a league-leading 96.2
innings in conference games and has a 2.68 ERA and 6-6 record in
Big West play. For the season, she owns a 3.68 ERA and 12-14
record. She is also moving her way up in the UCSB record books and
ranks fifth in career wins (38), seventh in shutouts (13), eighth
in complete games (45), ninth in strikeouts (255) and 10th in
innings pitched (444.1).
• Brooke's Bat
Junior Brooke
Putich rounds out the Gauchos' top-five batters with her .300
hitting this season. In Big West games she has posted a .304
batting average. She has had five multiple-hit outings during
league games. Putich ranks second in the Big West in triples (5)
and 13th nationally. She also ranks sixth in stolen bases (11)
among league players.
• The Galicinao File
Head coach Brie Galicinao,
who is now in her fourth season at the helm of the UCSB softball
program, has coached the Gauchos to a 96-112 cumulative record for
a .462 winning percentage, the second-best since the softball
program went Division I in 1982. Galicinao has coached three
players to All-Region honors, two players to Big West Field Player
of the Year accolades, one Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year
and 16 All-Big West Conference selections. In 2008, Galicinao was
named the Big West Co-Coach of the Year after her first season
leading the Gauchos.
