UC Santa Barbara workhorse Jennifer Davis was named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 7, 2006, it was announced Monday.
Davis started each game against UC Riverside over the weekend and led the Gauchos to a three-game sweep over the Highlanders. She improved to 17-13 overall this season after earning the victory in all three contests.
The Whittier, Calif. native was absolutely brilliant against the Highlanders allowing a total of just two runs--one earned--on eight hits in the three outings. She went the distance in each game and turned in a total of 22.0 innings pitched, striking out a total of 30 batters.
In game one Saturday, Davis blanked Riverside on just three hits for her 17th career shutout as the Gauchos took the opener 4-0. She struck out 11 and walked three in seven complete innings of work.
Davis returned to the circle for the nightcap and flirted with a no-hitter until she allowed a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. The homerun was the only hit of the game and the only earned run she allowed in the series. Davis fanned seven and walked five powering UCSB to a 2-1 victory.
The Gauchos' ace got the nod again Sunday and allowed one run on three hits as Santa Barbara pulled out the 2-1 win in eight innings to complete the series sweep. Davis struck out 12 batters, which is one shy of her season-high, and walked only one in eight strong innings pitched.
This is Davis' second Big West Pitcher of the Week award of the year and sixth of her career.
