SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UCSB sophomore Keilani Jennings swung a hot bat in an undefeated week for the Gauchos, netting her Big West Player of the Week honors.
The shortstop registered hits in four of UCSB's five games last week, including three multi-hit outings. She began the week with a hit, RBI and two walks in a sweep of South Dakota, but saved her best for the weekend's conference series against rival Cal Poly.
Jennings hit .700 (7-for-10) in the series against the Mustangs, collecting at least two hits in each game of the three-game showdown.
She kicked things off with a 2-for-3, two RBI, two runs scored, two doubles effort in the opener - a 10-2 victory - and then added two more hits, three runs scored, and an RBI in the middle game, which was a 12-2 run-rule victory.
Jennings then closed out her scorching week with a 3-for-4 showing in the series finale. She hit a homer, knocked in two runs, scored twice and doubled twice to lead the Gauchos to the 5-2 win and series sweep.
The series win marked the Gauchos' first against the Mustangs since the 2008 season and broke a six-game losing skid against Cal Poly. Two weeks into conference play, UCSB is the only team to sweep a Big West series and is now tied atop the league leader board with Pacific and Cal State Fullerton with a 4-2 record.
The Gauchos will return to the field on Wednesday when they head to Cal State Bakersfield for their final pair of non-conference regular season games. The doubleheader with the Roadrunners will start at 1:30 p.m. UCSB will resume Big West Conference action on Saturday against UC Riverside. The three-game series will begin at noon at Campus Diamond.
