IRVINE, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara received 26 votes and placed fourth in the Big West Preseason Softball Coaches poll released on Wednesday. The Gauchos, who return 10 letterwinners from last season's team that finished 26-22, kick off the 2006 campaign February 9 at the Campbell/Cartier Tournament in San Diego.
Cal State Fullerton, who returns four all-conference players from last year's roster that made a return to the postseason, received six first place votes and 48 total points for the No. 1 slot in the poll. Long Beach State recorded the other first-place vote and placed second with a total of 39 points after winning its second straight league title in 2005.
Cal Poly followed in third place with 32 points. The Mustangs finished second in the conference standings last season under the direction of 2005 Big West Coach of the year Jenny Condon.
Rounding out the Big West Conference poll was Pacific who also received 26 points, followed by Cal State Northridge (16), and UC Riverside (9).
