DAVIS, Calif. - After suffering three straight shutouts last weekend, UC Santa Barbara's (14-37, 5-15 Big West) bats came alive on Friday as the Gauchos split a doubleheader with league-leader UC Davis (26-26, 15-5) at the Aggies' La Rue Field. UCSB posted a 6-0 shutout over the Aggies before dropping the nightcap of the twin bill, 4-3.

Junior Jessica Beristianos drove home five of the Gauchos' nine runs, while senior Jessica Ziegler went 3-for-8 at the plate with two runs and two RBI during the doubleheader.

A big third inning propelled UCSB to the victory in game one. With one out, Ziegler, Jamie Adishian and Brooke Putich loaded the bases with consecutive base hits. A timely grand slam by Beristianos put the Gauchos on the board with a 4-0 lead.

With two outs at the top of the fifth, Beristianos earned a walk before Keilani Jennings jacked one over the center field fence to stretch the Gaucho lead to 6-0.

For her part, sophomore pitcher Krista Cobb tossed a complete game three-hitter. She did not give up a single extra-base hit and walked three in the victory.

Dana Waldusky took the loss after allowing all six of the Gauchos' earned runs off of seven hits. She walked one and fanned two in 4.2 innings of work.

The Gauchos' offense kept firing early in game two of the doubleheader. Ziegler led off with an infield single and moved to second one out later on a ground out by Putich. Beristianos once again came up big, doubling to right center, sending Ziegler home and giving the Gauchos an early 1-0 lead.

The Aggies scored their first run of the day at the bottom of the same inning when Sarah Axelson drove Elizabeth Santana home.

UCSB battled back in the second. Lainey DePompa got on first with one out following a throwing error by the Aggies' pitcher, Alex Holmes. Amanda Ziegler followed with the first of her two hits during the game, a single down the right field line. Jackie Sweet then loaded the bases on a fielder's choice before Jessica Ziegler's triple to left center field drove home two more Gaucho runs, pushing UCSB's lead to 3-1.

Davis tacked on another run at the bottom of the second when Santana drove Kelly Harman home with a triple down the right field line, cutting the Gauchos' advantage to just one run. The Aggies then tied the game at the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI single to left field by Jessica Gonzalez and then captured the lead when Holmes hit a sac fly to center field, sending Harman home.

Holmes held the Gauchos off to capture the win for the Aggies. The pitcher tossed the complete game allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits while walking two and fanning four.

Cobb (7-13) took the loss after allowing four runs - two earned - on six hits. She walked three and struck out one in four innings of work. Senior MeLinda Matsumoto closed the game and allowed just one hit during her two innings in the circle.

With the second game victory, UC Davis has secured first place in the Big West and the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

The Gauchos will complete the series against UC Davis and the 2010 season on Saturday at noon.
