RIVERSIDE, Calif. - A three-run fifth inning propelled UC Santa Barbara (10-30, 1-8) to its first Big West win of the year over UC Riverside (21-21, 6-3) on Sunday afternoon at the Highlander's Amy S. Harrison Field.
Sophomore Krista Cobb (3-9) helped lead the Gauchos to the victory by limiting the Highlanders to just one run on five hits while walking three and striking out six.
The Gauchos got on the scoreboard first at the top of the second inning. With one out, Keilani Jennings earned a walk and one out later advanced to second when Lainey DePompa got hit by a pitch. Jackie Sweet singled to right center field during the next play driving Jennings home.
Riverside knotted the game at the bottom of the fourth. Brittany Kenney led off with single to left field and was pushed to second by a sacrifice bunt from Alexis Pickett. Cobb struck out the next batter swinging to earn the second out, but Alexis Villamor hit an RBI single to right field sending Kenney home for the tying run.
UCSB battled back at the top of the next inning. DePompa led off with a walk and Sweet then got on base after being hit by a pitch. The Highlanders grabbed their first out of the inning when Jessica Ziegler hit a fielder's choice, but Brooke Putich followed with a two-RBI triple to right center field that regained the lead for UCSB. A double by Jessica Beristianos during the next at-bat drove Putich home to put the Gauchos up, 4-1.
Cobb allowed just two hits during the final three innings as UCSB held on for the victory.
The Gauchos will be back in action next weekend when they head to Cal State Northridge for a three-game Big West series. The series will start with a noon doubleheader on Saturday, April 24.
