Gauchos Drop a Pair of Eight Inning Heartbreakers to Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara softball team saw its current losing streak stretch to five games on Friday when it dropped both games of its doubleheader against Pacific in extra innings by way of 3-2 and 5-4 scores at the Tiger's Bill Simoni Field.

With the loss, the Gaucho season record falls to 20-13 and 0-5 in Big West Conference play. The Tigers are now 27-13 on the year and 2-0 in conference action.

Game one remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Tigers scored a run with a sacrifice fly by Alyce Jorgeson to get on the board 1-0. A single off of Brittany Putich's bat brought Tisha Duran home at the top of the sixth to tie the game up at 1-1.

Pacific responded at the bottom of the inning when Lauren Weymen scored on a Gaucho error to once again give the Tigers a one run advantage. At the top of the seventh, a sacrifice fly from Tiffany Wright brought Christine Ramos home once again tying the game. The Tigers managed two hits at the bottom of the inning, but the Gaucho defense kept them run-less sending the game into extra innings. A walk with the bases loaded at the bottom of the eighth brought home the game-winning run giving the Tigers the 3-2 win.

Ramos led the Gauchos in game one going 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base while Putich was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jennifer Davis took the loss after pitching the last 1.2 innings of the game, giving up one run on two hits with three walks and a strikeout. Freshman MeLinda Matsumoto started the game for the Gauchos, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout in six innings of work.

Chelsea Engle (14-9) earned the win for Pacific after throwing a complete eight innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking four and fanning four. Casey Goldsand led the Tigers at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Tigers kept their momentum rolling at the bottom of the first inning in the second game of the day as they scored three runs to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. The third inning proved to be lucky for the Gauchos though, as they got on the board with a RBI single from Tisha Duran followed by a two-run double to left center off the bat of Tiffany Wright to tie the game at 3-3.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth when Pacific's Briana Santos doubled down the left line bringing in another Tiger run to put Pacific up 4-3. An RBI single off Ramos' bat in the seventh inning once again tied the score up in the seventh.

Pacific once again grabbed the win in the eighth with an RBI double from Jennifer Curtier, ending the game at 5-4.

Ramos and Duran each went 2-for-4 with a run while Wright was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Jessica Hejna also went 2-for-4 with a run. Davis once again took the loss for UCSB after giving up the game-winning run on four hits and striking out four in three innings of work. The Whittier, Calif. native is now 4-10 on the season. Freshman Lindsay Correa went 0.1 innings and allowed three runs on one hit and walked three while Tami Weston allowed one run on four hits, walked seven and struck out two in four innings of work.

Pacific's Heidi Helberg (3-0) captured the win after tossing 1.1 innings and allowing just two hits. Jorgensen started the game for the Tigers in the circle and allowed four Gaucho runs on seven hits while walking two and fanning a pair. At the plate Curtier went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI.

UCSB will conclude its series with Pacific tomorrow at noon with a single game. The game will be played at Bill Simoni Field.
