SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara softball team dropped a pair of Big West Conference games at Cal Poly on Saturday evening. The Mustangs (24-9, 3-2) posted a 12-5 and then a 6-0 victory over the Gauchos (18-15, 2-3) at Bob Janssen Field.
In the first game, the Gauchos got in trouble early when the Cal Poly loaded the bases with one out. Anna Cahn hit a single to the right side, bringing home the first run. One out later, MeLinda Matsumoto came in to pitch, replacing Krista Cobb. The Mustangs tallied seven more runs - all unearned due to an error during the first play of the inning - on five hits before the Gauchos were able to stop the bleeding.
Trailing 8-0, Amanda Ziegler led off the second inning with a double to center field. Two outs later, Lainey DePompa walked putting two runners on. Jackie Conlin followed with a two-RBI double to center field and then Christine Ramos sent Conlin home with a RBI single, cutting the Cal Poly lead to 8-3.
At the bottom of the fourth, the Mustangs struck again. Krysten Cary led off with a walk and two outs later, Cahn doubled to right field and Cary moved to third. A single up the middle from Stephanie Correia sent the two runners home, stretching the Mustang advantage to 10-3.
Jessica Ziegler and Tiffany Wright posted back-to-back doubles at the top of the fifth before a pitch hit Jessica Beristianos, loading the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly from Amanda Ziegler sent her sister home. During the next play, Wright came home on a wild pitch, putting UCSB within five runs again.
At the bottom of the next inning, Cal Poly added two more runs. With two runners in scoring position, Stephanie Tam grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Nora Sobczak to score. Cary then reached on a Gaucho error, which also allowed Cristen Lee to score.
Conlin and Ramos hit back-to-back singles in the top of the sixth, but those were the last hits of the game as Cal Poly held on for the 12-5 win.
Cahn (15-5) picked up the win in the circle after tossing the complete game and allowing five earned runs on eight hits. She walked one and struck out five.
Cobb (11-5) took the loss for the Gauchos after tossing two thirds of an inning. She allowed four runs - one earned - on three hits and walked one. Matsumoto allowed eight runs - three earned - on 12 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in her 5.1 innings of work.
At the plate, Conlin led UCSB going 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Ramos went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a stolen base.
The Mustang momentum carried over into the second game and Helen Penna (8-4) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just six hits while striking out three.
