FULLERTON, Calif. - Liz Walters and Jessica Hejna drove in UCSB's only runs of the game and Jennifer Davis made her third straight appearance in the circle as Cal State Fullerton defeated UC Santa Barbara 8-2 in the final game of the series Sunday at the Titan Softball Complex.

With the loss, the Gauchos fall to 15-11 overall and 1-2 in Big West play, while the Titans improve to 21-17 (2-1 Big West).

For the first time in the series, Fullerton struck first scoring a run in the opening inning when left fielder Ashley Van Boxmeer walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

The Titans then increased their lead to 2-0 when third baseman Crystal Vieyra scored on a single to left by Van Boxmeer in the bottom of the second.

UCSB threatened in the top of the third after loading the bases with two outs on a bunt single by Christine Ramos, Kendra Singley getting hit by a pitch and a walk to Tiffany Wright, but Titan starter Marissa Marzan struck out the next batter to close out the inning.

The Gauchos got back-to-back singles from freshman right fielder Jackie Conlin and Ramos to start the fifth inning, but Marzan rebounded once again and retired the next three batters in order.

A four-run Fullerton fifth inning highlighted by a two-run double by catcher Kiki Munoz and Jenna Wheeler's homer to left with a runner on second, put the game out of reach for Santa Barbara at 6-0.

UCSB finally got on the board an inning later when sophomore catcher Ericka Hansen hit a leadoff double to center field. Freshman Lauren Augino came on to pinch run for Hansen and advanced to third on junior shortstop Brittany Putich's single to right field. Junior designated player Walters then singled through the left side, scoring Augino.

After Candice Parker came on in relief for the Titans, a walk to sophomore pinch hitter Danielle Meyers loaded the bases. Junior left fielder Hejna drew a walk two batters later and Putich scored, as the Gauchos climbed to within four, 6-2.

Wheeler's bases loaded single down the right field line in the bottom of the sixth made it 8-2.

Marzan earned the pitching victory for Fullerton, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out six and walking four in five innings pitched. Baker pitched two hitless innings of relief.

Davis, who pitched in all three games of the series and started two, took the loss for UCSB. She allowed six runs on six hits, struck out three and walked four in four innings of work. The Whittier, Calif. native falls to 10-8 on the year.

Tami Weston came on in relief in the fifth inning and allowed two runs on two hits, while striking out two and walking two.

Sunday's start was only the second this year that Davis did not go the distance.

The Gauchos return home Wednesday, April 5 to resume a halted doubleheader with Loyola Marymount that was called March 25 due to rain. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
