SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The defending Big West Conference champion Cal State Fullerton softball team shutout UC Santa Barbara, 5-0 on Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep of the Gauchos in both teams' league opening series at Campus Diamond.
With the loss, UCSB falls to 20-11 on the season, 11-5 at home and 0-3 in conference games. Fullerton improves to 21-15 and 3-0 in Big West games.
Senior pitcher Jennifer Davis pitched the complete seven innings allowing five runs on four hits while walking six and striking out six. The hurler is now 4-8 on the season. Davis also put up a 1-for-2 performance at the plate with a walk. Christine Ramos, Jessica Hejna and Nicole Churnock accounted for the Gauchos' three additional hits during the game.
Pitcher Candice Baker picked up her third win of the weekend over the Gauchos after throwing four innings allowing only three hits and striking out seven. Brooke Weekly relieved Baker and threw three innings for the Titans allowing one hit while walking one and striking out one.
Third basemen Jessica Doucette hit a two-run homer, her third round trip of the weekend, and catcher Kiki Munoz picked up a two-run homerun as well and also brought home the game-winning run with a walk in the first inning.
The Gauchos got off to a rough start at the top of the first when with one out, the Titans loaded the bases on three consecutive walks. Munoz earned the fourth walk bringing in the first run of the game. Davis proceeded to strike out the next two batters to come out of the inning trailing 1-0.
The first three UCSB batters went down in order at the bottom of the first before a two-run homer from Doucette put the Titans up 3-0 at the top of the second. At the bottom of the same inning, Brittany Putich was hit by a pitch with one out. A Titan error followed allowing Davis to reach first. With UCSB's first runner of the game in position to score, Fullerton's Baker fanned the next two batters to get out of the inning.
Both teams were held scoreless in the third and fourth before Munoz hit her two-run homer in the fifth to extend the Titan lead to 5-0.
At the bottom of the same inning, Churnock led off with a single to second base and Ramos followed when she reached on another Fullerton error to put two runners on base. A double play and fly out to right field ended the inning with one Gaucho runner stranded. Both teams were held scoreless through the final two innings giving the Titans the 5-0 win.
Fullerton opened the series against the Gauchos with a 3-1 win in 10 innings followed by an 11-4 victory during Saturday's doubleheader. With the series sweep, Fullerton is now 88-7 in the all-time series with the Gauchos.
UCSB will be back in action next weekend when they hit the road for a three-game Big West series at Pacific. A doubleheader will be played on Friday, April 6 at 12 and 2:00 p.m. followed by the series closer at noon on Saturday, April 7.
