PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Kendra Singley went 2-for-3 with an a RBI and Jennifer Davis limited the Jayhawks to one run on three hits, earning her team-leading fifth victory of the year as UC Santa Barbara outlasted Kansas 2-1 in their fourth game of the Palm Springs Classic.
The Gauchos (7-4 overall) scored first for the third game in a row this weekend, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. With one out, freshman second baseman Christine Ramos walked. She advanced to second on a single by junior left fielder Jessica Hejna, then scored on junior center fielder's single to
KU tallied its only run of the contest after loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Jessica Moppin and back-to-back walks to Betsy Wilson and Erika Simington. Val Chapple's two out single to center field scored Moppin and tied the score at 1-1.
UCSB responded with a run in the top of the sixth inning to reclaim the lead. With one out, junior shortstop Brittany Putich reached on an infield single to third base. She advanced to third on Shelby Hensler's single to center field. After Serena Settlemier came on in relief of starter Valerie George, Ramos singled and Putich came home for what became the winning run.
Davis got the nod for Santa Barbara and kept the Kansas offense in check throughout the game. She limited the Jayhawks to just three hits in seven complete innings, improving to 5-2 on the year. Davis walked three and struck out a season-high 12 batters in her best performance of 2006.
George took the loss for Kansas after giving up two runs on seven hits, while striking out six in 5.1 innings pitched. She falls 0-1 on the year. Settlemier allowed one hit with two walks and two punchouts in an inning and two thirds.
