PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Tiffany Wright finished 3-for-3 with a two run homer that accounted for the Gauchos' only runs as UC Santa Barbara lost for the third time this year--all to opponents ranked in the Top 25--to Oklahoma 6-2 in their second game in the Palm Springs Classic late Friday night.
UCSB falls to 6-3 on the year, while the OU improves to 11-2-1 with the win.
The Gauchos got on the board first when freshman first baseman Wright pounded a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the first to give Santa Barbara its only runs and lead of the game. Wright leads the team with two homeruns on the year.
Oklahoma responded in the top of the second inning after starting pitcher Jennifer Davis gave up three straight walks to load the bases. Nicole Denes then hit a grand slam to center field on a 3-2 pitch, and the Sooners took the lead, 4-2.
After the Gauchos put runners on second and third with one out and failed to capitalize in the last of the second inning, the Sooners extended their lead to 6-2 on Susan Ogden's RBI double to right center field in the top of the third.
Both teams went scoreless after that point. Santa Barbara was held to one hit the last four innings.
In addition to her big hit, Denes threw her second complete game of the year and allowed only two earned runs on five hits while fanning five batters and earned the win for the Sooners.
Davis dropped to 4-2 after giving up six runs on four hits in just 2.1 innings of work in a losing cause for the Gauchos. After pitching brilliantly in Santa Barbara's first game of the night, Ginger Gutierrez finished out the final 4.2 innings and only gave up two hits and no runs while striking out four.
The Gauchos take the field Saturday when they square off with No. 19 LSU at 6:00 p.m., followed by an 8:30 matchup with Kansas as the Palm Springs Classic continues.
