ST. GEORGE, Utah - UC Santa Barbara improved to 4-1 on the season after posting wins over Maine (0-4) and Utah Valley (2-2) on Saturday, the Gauchos' final day of competition at the Red Desert Classic.

Against Maine, the Gauchos got out to a one-run lead at the bottom of the second when junior Jessica Beristianos scored as Kelsey Anderson reached first on an error by the third baseman. Beristianos had reached first on a single to center field before being bunted to second by Kelly McDonald and she then advanced to third when Priscilla Perez grounded out to first base.

The Black Bears tied the game in the fourth when Kristen Calvetti doubled to bring Whitney Spangler home.

UCSB was able to resume the lead in the fifth. Perez led off with a walk and her pinch runner, Brooke Putich, was able to move to third following a bunt single from Anderson and an ensuing throwing error by Maine's third baseman. Tiffany Corder hit into a fielder's choice during the next play, but drove home Putich, giving UCSB a 2-1 advantage.

Maine knotted the game up at the top of the seventh with a RBI double from Kristin Allen that drove Brynne Davis home. The game, however, did not remain tied for long. Perez led off with a double to center field and then came home when Anderson reached on yet another throwing error.

Beristianos led the team going 2-for-3 from the plate with a run while Anderson was 1-for-3 with two RBI. In the circle, Lindsey Correa (1-0) tossed the complete game allowing just two earned runs on four hits. She walked three and struck out four.

The second game of the day was another nail-biter. UCSB jumped out to an early lead over Utah Valley at top of the first inning. Jessica Ziegler hit a single to short at the top of the order and advanced to second when Jamie Adishian grounded out to first base. Keilani Jennings and Beristianos then drew consecutive walks to put three runners on with just one out. A wild pitch during McDonald's at-bat resulted in the first run of the game. The freshman then singled and advanced to second on the throw, driving Jennings home. Perez grounded out to second but earned the RBI as Beristianos crossed home, putting UCSB up, 3-0.

The Gauchos tallied another run at the top of the third. Adishian drew a walk and then Jennings moved her to scoring position with a single to center field. A sacrifice fly from Beristianos allowed Adishian to reach third and one out later, Adishian was able to score when the Utah Valley catcher made a throwing error while attempting to catch Jennings stealing second.

The Wolverines cut the UCSB lead to just two runs at the top of the next inning when Kyli Flannery hit a two-RBI single up the middle. Utah Valley then added another run in the seventh with an RBI single from Shaylyn Jenkins-Varney, but it wasn't enough as the Gauchos held on for the 4-3 victory.

McDonald led the way going 2-for-3 with an RBI in the victory. Senior MeLinda Matsumoto (2-0) took the win after tossing 4.1 innings. She allowed two earned runs on three hits while walking two and striking out three. Sophomore Krista Cobb earned the save after tossing the final 2.2 innings. She gave up one earned run on two hits, walked two and struck out four.
