UCSB Concludes Campbell/Cartier Tournament with 7-2 Victory over Oklahoma State
Feb. 12, 2006
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Starting pitcher Jennifer Davis had a stellar performance in the circle and finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI at the plate as UC Santa Barbara defeated Oklahoma State 7-2 in the final game of the San Diego State Campbell/Cartier Tournament for both squads.
Oklahoma State, who committed six errors in the contest, falls to 1-4 on the year.
For the fourth time in five games, the Gauchos got on the scoreboard first Sunday, scoring twice in the bottom of the second inning. Junior shortstop Brittany Putich singled down the left field line to lead off the inning and then advanced to second when Davis reached base on an error by the Cowgirls' shortstop. Sophomore designated player Danielle Meyers advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt. Putich then scored on a sacrifice by junior third baseman Shelby Hensler and Davis scored on a single by catcher Ericka Hansen.
Oklahoma State scored a run in the top of the third when catcher Courtney Totte doubled to right field, scoring center fielder Shanel Scott from second, cutting the Gaucho lead in half, 2-1.
UCSB added a run in its half the fourth after freshman second baseman Christine Ramos singled to center field. Sophomore Nicole Churnock, who came on to pinch run after a Meyers single, scored from third on the play. Santa Barbara took a 3-1 lead.
OSU scored its only other run of the game in the top of the fifth to pull within a run at 3-2, when Totted doubled again, this time down the right field line. Scott, who had walked and stole second, scored for the second time in the game.
The Gauchos responded with a four runs in the bottom of the inning that put the game out of reach for the Cowgirls. Freshman first baseman Tiffany Wright led off the inning with a triple to center field. After Putich reached on a fielder's choice, Davis singled to first and Wright scored. Freshman Jackie Conlin came on to pinch run for Davis and the runners advanced when Meyers popped up to first base. The next batter was Hensler, whose sacrifice bunt scored Putich. After Hansen walked, Ramos was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Conlin scored. Junior left fielder Jessica Hejna then doubled to right, scoring Hensler and UCSB took a commanding 7-2 lead.
The five run cushion would be all that starting pitcher Davis needed. She improved to 3-1 on the year after throwing six complete innings in the win. She held Oklahoma State to two runs on eight hits while striking out a season high nine and walking five.
Junior hurler Chelsey Barclay, who pitched three innings and allowed three runs on four hits, took the loss for the Cowgirls. Santa Barbara returns to action this weekend when they host the Commercial Capital Invitational Friday, February 17 through Sunday, February 19 at Campus Diamond. The Gauchos open the annual event Friday at 11:30 when they take on San Diego State.
